What large-scale school data reveals about digital language learning and student outcomes

As digital learning technologies become increasingly embedded within education systems, policymakers and educators are seeking stronger evidence about how these tools contribute to learning when implemented at scale. While many educational technology solutions are evaluated through short-term pilots or small-scale interventions, fewer studies examine their use within established school systems over multiple years.

Today, Xeropan is among the very few language learning platforms globally that combine independent international validation with proven nationwide implementation in public education.

Recent research conducted in Hungary examines Xeropan’s implementation within the Hungarian Public Educational K-12 Learning and Student Management Ecosystem. By combining national assessment data with large-scale surveys of students, teachers, and parents, the study provides insights into how sustained use of a digital language learning environment relates to learner engagement and educational outcomes.

K-12 teacher led blended learning

Digital language learning in real educational contexts

Since 2022 Xeropan, has been integrated into Hungary’s Public Educational K-12 Learning and Student Management platform as part of the public education system. The module was designed to complement classroom language instruction by providing structured digital learning opportunities that extend beyond school hours while remaining connected to teachers’ instructional practices.

The platform offers curriculum-aligned learning materials in multiple languages, including English and German, enabling students to engage in regular practice both during and outside classroom instruction. Built around principles of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), the system supports flexible learning pathways while encouraging learner autonomy through self-paced activities and continuous feedback.

For teachers, the platform provides tools to organize learning activities, assign classroom and homework tasks, monitor learner progress, and support differentiated instruction. These capabilities are particularly relevant in larger classes, where timely visibility into student progress can help inform instructional decisions and targeted learner support.

For students, the platform creates opportunities for additional language exposure beyond scheduled lessons. By combining classroom instruction with structured independent practice, the system aims to strengthen learning continuity and encourage more consistent engagement with language learning over time. Rather than replacing classroom teaching, it functions as an extension of existing educational practice, connecting school-based instruction with home learning.

K-12 classroom usage

What large-scale data suggests

The research drew on multiple sources of evidence, including validated questionnaires completed by 894 students, 122 language teachers, and 352 parents, alongside national assessment data from 207 schools. To examine institutional patterns, schools were also grouped according to their level of Xeropan usage, allowing comparisons between higher and lower implementation intensity.

The findings indicate several consistent patterns:

  • Schools with higher levels of Xeropan usage demonstrated significantly stronger English language assessment results than schools with lower levels of usage intensity. Statistical analyses (including t-tests and ANOVA) identified significant differences between these groups.
  • Students reported that the platform supported independent learning and provided meaningful opportunities for language practice outside the classroom. Approximately two-thirds of surveyed learners recognised the platform’s value in supporting self-directed learning.
  • Many students associated regular platform use with increased motivation and greater confidence in their language learning progress.
  • Teachers reported that the platform supported lesson organisation, learner differentiation, and monitoring of student progress, with most respondents considering it straightforward to integrate into everyday teaching practice.
  • Parents generally viewed the platform positively, particularly for supporting independent learning at home and reducing the need for continuous parental assistance during language practice.

Importantly, while the study identified statistically significant associations between platform use and learning outcomes, the authors note that the findings demonstrate a strong relationship rather than establishing definitive causality.

Evidence based AI-speaking supported learning with improved performance

Why this matters for EdTech

The findings reinforce an increasingly recognised principle within digital education: the impact of educational technology depends not only on the quality of the tool itself, but also on how effectively it is embedded within everyday teaching and learning.

In this case, the digital learning environment formed part of an integrated instructional model rather than functioning as a standalone application. The research suggests that several characteristics may contribute to successful implementation:

  • Integration between classroom instruction and independent learning
  • Sustained engagement over multiple school years
  • Support for learner autonomy and self-paced practice
  • Tools that enable teachers to monitor progress and differentiate instruction
  • Alignment with curriculum objectives and school workflows

These characteristics are consistent with broader international discussions on how digital learning environments can support system-level educational improvement when implementation extends beyond isolated pilot projects.

K-12 classroom usage

Supporting learners who need additional support

One of the most consistent findings across students, teachers, and parents was the perceived value of the platform in supporting independent learning outside formal classroom instruction.

Digital learning environments that provide structured, curriculum-aligned practice may be particularly valuable for learners requiring additional opportunities to consolidate language skills at their own pace. By extending access to guided practice beyond school hours, such systems can help create more continuous learning experiences while allowing teachers to maintain oversight of learner progress.

Although individual learning needs differ, the study suggests that systematic implementation of digital language learning environments may contribute to more flexible and inclusive approaches to supporting diverse learners.

K-12 large scale roll-out

Broader relevance for language learning innovation

The Hungarian experience reflects broader international developments in educational technology, where attention is increasingly shifting from digital content alone toward the design of learning ecosystems that combine classroom teaching, independent practice, and data-informed instruction.

Several themes emerging from the research align with international priorities for digital language education:

  • Supporting learner autonomy through structured independent practice
  • Integrating digital learning into everyday classroom routines
  • Providing teachers with actionable information about learner progress
  • Enabling differentiated instruction across diverse learner needs
  • Scaling digital learning within existing education systems rather than through isolated interventions

These findings contribute to the growing evidence base on how digital language learning can support education systems when implementation is sustained, curriculum-aligned, and supported by teachers.

Looking ahead

As education systems continue to expand the role of digital learning, understanding not only whether technology works, but also under what conditions it contributes to improved learning outcomes, becomes increasingly important.

The Hungarian study offers an example of how large-scale implementation data can complement smaller experimental studies by examining digital learning within everyday educational practice. Its findings suggest that sustained, system-level implementation may support improved language learning experiences while strengthening learner autonomy, teacher support, and institutional capacity.

While further longitudinal and comparative research will continue to strengthen the evidence base, this study contributes valuable insights into how digital language learning environments can be integrated into public education systems to support learners, teachers, and schools at scale
