Theory

eKidz leverages Connectivism, Cognitivism, and Social Learning Theory to facilitate language learning without the need for teachers. Reading Scaffolding Features (RSF)—such as animated illustrations, syllable highlighting, and recording/playback—enable a personalize learning experience. By incorporating AI, eKidz engages learners in self-directed reading and encourages the imitation of native speakers. Through age-appropriate pedagogy, eKidz supports cognitive, social, and emotional growth.

Information about curriculum

The curriculum design of eKidz is customized, leveled reading practice for individual, small group, and whole group instruction. There is limitless potential for AI-supported reading instruction through texts and tasks that engage and motivate the reader. Whereas common early reading programs focus mainly on decoding skills, eKidz guides young, diverse readers toward reading proficiency through scaffolded text choices and integrated literacy applications – all guided with evidence-based, individualizing AI feedback. Reader: eKidz recognizes that every learner is different and has a unique learning progression. eKidz addresses different learning styles with unique adjustability of support tools and AI-feedback features. It aids the development of biliteracy for multilingual learners. All texts and features are currently available in English, Spanish, German, and Ukrainian. Learners become confident readers in a target language and also in their home language. Text: eKidz features a broad variety of fiction and non-fiction books. The texts were developed and evaluated by scientists with a focus on their readability in multiple languages. Flexibly adjustable scaffolding tools support the decoding and comprehension process, such as leveled text choice, animated visuals, read-aloud-modeling, and other graphic support features. Task: eKidz guides young readers as they transition from reading skills practice to applied reading strategies. AI-guided, immediate scoring and feedback features focus on reading fluency, accuracy, and reading comprehension. AI also provides concrete, personalized feedback to the reader resulting in improved reading outcomes. eKidz utilizes neuro-linguistic research on literacy as an integrated cognitive process, which combines all four language domains to build reading proficiency. Text exploration enables varied possibilities as recorded retelling or written response to text-related prompts engage the reader. Instruction: eKidz is suitable as an independent practice tool but allows for a wide range of creative and multi-sensory activities during direct instruction. SMART diagnostic tools and AI-voice recognition features provide the teacher with detailed performance reports and assist in assigning customized, integrated intervention tools. eKidz promotes the seamless integration of practice and assessment.

Pedagogical design

The pedagogical design of eKidz incorporates multiple educational theories to support language learners independently. Connectivism shapes its use of technology and social connections, while Cognitivism promotes active learner participation. Social Learning Theory encourages students to mimic native speakers, enhancing pronunciation. Age-appropriate pedagogy ensures developmental alignment, and Reading Scaffolding Features like text highlighting and recording support student progression. The design fosters independence, reflection, and collaboration.

User Experience

User interface
eKidz offers tailored interfaces for administrators, teachers, assistant teachers, and students, directing each to appropriate landing pages. Teachers access "Class Management," while students resume at their "Books Overview" in their target language and level. The user interface has evolved through testing and feedback, enabling teachers to address individual student needs in literacy and language acquisition. Key enhancements include: Targeted Skill Focus: Teachers can assign specific language skills for students to concentrate on, adjustable per language for multilingual learners. Goal Setting: A "Goal Section" allows teachers to set class-wide or individual linguistic focuses, accommodating temporary objectives like reading or listening comprehension weeks. Student Progress Indicators: Upon login, students see color-coded goals represented as flower petals on each book, indicating activity status—optional, mandatory, in-progress, or completed. AI-Assisted Reading Assessment: Reading fluency test results display the percentage of correctly read words, introducing reading speed feedback once accuracy thresholds are met. This dual metric aids teachers in regrouping students and implementing differentiated classroom activities. eKidz continually refines login processes based on classroom case studies and user feedback, collaborating with educational institutions to adapt to evolving digital infrastructures. The "Keep me signed in" feature differentiates between home use, where continuous login is beneficial, and school use on shared devices, where automatic logout after inactivity protects user accounts.

Data-driven product development
eKidz collaborates with leading scientific institutions in Germany and Ukraine, alongside individual researchers, to enhance its platform. Two major developments introduced last academic year are the AI Literacy Assistant and Adaptive Feedback, both resulting from German federal R&D projects. Improvements include a redesigned text leveling methodology across German, English, Spanish, and Ukrainian; revamped comprehension question tests categorized by question type and linguistic level; and AI-driven automatic scoring of oral reading fluency. Researchers evaluate speech recognition, addressing issues like classroom noise and children's whispering by refining the UI and training ASR systems accordingly. eKidz operates under strict EU and German data protection regulations but can provide detailed usage data to authorized entities upon request, especially for humanitarian projects. Current scientific support comes from the Fraunhofer Institute, the University of Regensburg, and the University of Applied Sciences of Flensburg in Germany, with a research affiliation with the University of Calgary. Scientific evaluations, based on parental consent, are conducted, such as a study comparing Bavarian classes using eKidz over 4-6 weeks against control groups, led by the University of Regensburg at the Bavarian Ministry of Education's request. Another evaluation is ongoing in a humanitarian project with Ukrainian NGOs, supported by the Humanitarian Fund for Ukraine. Insights from these studies inform product enhancements, which are then implemented by the development team.

Geographic focus
eKidz can implement a subsection of the language program. For example the team is currently adding the LatAm version of Spanish program. If there is an element in the visualisation that requires adjustments i.e. Lebkuchen in Germany vs Turron in Spain as a Christmas sweet, we adapt the text and illustration. That is only possible as eKidz has an internal content publishing software and ownership of all the IP rights for texts, translations, illustrations and audio.

Pricing Strategy

eKidz is focused on B2G and B2B while available to B2C over the app stores. We offer annual subscriptions based on different models by students, by students and number of classes/groups, by pool of schools, by large pools for state licences. All licences outside of B2C are annual licences paid upfront and in many cases for a period of several years. For the larger pools we price the % of active users based on our experience and a potential for a roll out. eKidz' subscriptions are accessible and target broad range or students and schools rather than a selected privileged population. However we do have special pricing terms for the special needs education as we believe eKidz' impact is significant with these students.

Adjustable Pricing Options

The pricing models for the school version are managed on eKidz’ backend and are fully adjustable. We currently run three different contexts and pricing options for the school market: 1. By student / academic year pricing, predominantly for the US and LatAm markets, 2. Lump sum / academic year for large state licenses that includes access for all primary schools. These calculations are based on number of schools in the pool and access to AI Literacy Assistant, 3. Humanitarian project price by student for a pool of students and not restricted by a number of schools and number of classes, the calculations are based on an assumption of intensive monitoring of activities leading to a 100% utilization of the licenses and on the available budget to cover server costs (Microsoft Azure) in the country i.e. sponsorship program or other budgets.

Large implementation example

eKidz holds three state licences in Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Bremen in Germany. Since 2021 the team was working with each state government to support the roll out with all primary schools and provide professional teachers development. eKidz is one of the 42 national projects that are part of the New Educational Platform (NEP) developed and supported by the federal government in Germany. The projects are focused on life long learning and EdTech innovation that should be made available to every student over the NEP in Germany. eKidz partnered up with two national NGOs in Ukraine to implement one of the large scale educational projects supported by the Humanitarian Fund for Ukraine in the 6 Eastern regions, rural area and in a close proximity to the frontline. The project positively impacted the learning outcomes and mental health of over 35000 students and 11000 teachers are beneficiaries.

Equity of access & Gender

Accordion toggle
Product usage between genders
Using digital platforms from an early age boosts the confidence and ability of children in computer literacy and increases the value they can extract from other digital tools. Using digital learning platforms such as eKidz, acquaints children, especially girls, (who have been shown to lag behind boys in benefitting from digital tools) and redresses the digital divide at a time when the gender divide in internet use is widening. This is a step towards empowering participation in society. Both boys and girls benefit from the flexibility and convenience of digital tools such as eKidz. Learning can take place at a time, place and pace that fits in with their lifestyle. Interacting dynamically is an engaging and motivating way of learning that helps lessons stick. In the words of Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Utilizing digital technologies make education more equitable and inclusive, especially when the tool provides improved flexibility and capacity for personalization. This meets the needs of diverse boys and girls at the point where they need. Digital technologies offer benefits by diversifying not just what is learned but where, when and how it is learned.
