Theory

Maths-Whizz is grounded in principles like Bloom’s Taxonomy, adopting a mastery approach where students progress only after demonstrating understanding. Adaptive technology, ensures personalised learning according to each child’s unique needs and pace of learning. Impact is measured through progress metrics, analytics, reporting, and research showing accelerated attainment (60 mins/week on Maths-Whizz improves maths age by, on average, 18 months in their first year).

Strong evidence of impact

Impact 3/3

Maths-Whizz has evidence from multiple contexts or longitudinal studies.

Different levels of research evidence indicate the reliability of the proof of positive impact. The tools featured in the Learning Cabinet range from:

  • Strong: Evidence from multiple contexts or longitudinal studies.
  • Moderate: External evaluation with transparent methods.
  • Promising: Small pilot or expert review with documented outcomes.

Curriculum

Information about curriculum

Maths-Whizz is built on the Maths-Whizz International Curriculum, designed by education experts and informed by global curricula. It breaks mathematics into progressive learning objectives across key strands, enabling step-by-step mastery. The adaptive Tutor uses diagnostic assessment and continuous progress tracking to personalise each student’s pathway, targeting gaps while advancing strengths. Content is interactive, scaffolded, and gamified, with voiced support to aid accessibility. The Maths-Whizz Tutor curriculum is internationally benchmarked, whilst the Teacher's Resources are aligned with international curricula e.g. UK National Curriculum,  the recently released New Zealand Curriculum (Te Mātaiaho) and previous New Zealand Curriculum (NZC), Thai Curriculum, US Common Core/TEKS, and Kenya’s CBE.

Pedagogical design

Maths-Whizz leverages a three-part Suite: (i) a digital resource library mapped to curricula, (ii) the adaptive Maths-Whizz Tutor, and (iii) live data for decision-making. The Tutor simulates a human tutor (Bloom, 1984) via diagnostic assessment, AI-driven personalised plans, scaffolded lessons within the Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky), and gamified, voiced-over activities. Rooted in mastery learning (Bloom, 1968), pupils progress only after demonstrating understanding through scaffolded exercises (Morgan, 2009) and tests, optimising 45–60 minutes weekly use.

User interface

We ensure an intuitive user interface through ongoing usability testing and data-driven refinements. Regular user testing with students, teachers, and parents provides direct feedback on navigation, clarity, and ease of use. In parallel, we monitor analytics on usage and progress to identify friction points or drop-off areas, helping us pinpoint where UI or content adjustments are needed. For example, we have simplified lesson navigation to reduce clicks, enhanced visual cues to guide students seamlessly through activities, and improved reporting dashboards to give teachers real-time insights more efficiently. This cycle of testing and analytics ensures the interface remains accessible, engaging, and responsive to user needs.

Data-driven product development

We use evidence and data insights at both product and research levels to drive enhancements. Real-time reporting on usage, progressions, Maths Age gains, and Progress Rates allows us to analyse how effectively students are learning. By monitoring patterns across schools and demographics, we identify where learners excel and where they struggle, guiding improvements to content sequencing, scaffolding, and support. Independent evaluations and case studies provide further evidence of impact, validating our approach and highlighting areas for refinement. This continuous feedback loop—combining in-product analytics with external evidence—ensures Maths-Whizz evolves to maximise learning outcomes and inclusivity.

Pricing Strategy

Maths-Whizz uses an annual subscription-based pricing strategy, structured as a combination of a per-school fee and a per-student fee.  For example, larger schools purchasing multi-year subscriptions may benefit from lower per-student rates, while schools requiring enhanced training and support may be at the higher end of the scale. At government or system-wide scale, bespoke pricing models are applied. This flexible approach ensures affordability while meeting the diverse needs of schools and education systems.

Adjustable Pricing Options

Yes, Maths-Whizz offers bespoke, context-dependent pricing options. Pricing is adjusted based on market needs and analysis, taking into account factors such as geography, economic context, and scale of implementation.

Large implementation example

Maths-Whizz has been deployed at significant scale across diverse regions:

  • Kenya (Project iMlango, 2014–2019): Implemented in 205 primary schools across four counties (Kajiado, Kilifi, Makueni, Uasin Gishu), reaching over 100,000 students in rural and peri-urban settings. Focused on addressing barriers to girls’ education while improving maths learning outcomes through adaptive virtual tutoring.
  • Democratic Republic of Congo (2018–2019): A 1.5-year pilot designed and implemented Maths-Whizz across 20 schools (~5,000 students) in six regions. The project harnessed individualised learning to strengthen numeracy outcomes.
  • Mexico (Aguascalientes, 2015–2017): In partnership with the Ministry of Education, Maths-Whizz supported 125 schools and 50,000 pupils. The project provided teacher training, capacity building, and Spanish-localised resources aligned to the national curriculum, blending whole-class delivery with individual virtual tutoring.
  • Russia (Mat-Reshka, 2011–2013): In partnership with the Moscow Department of Education, Maths-Whizz was rolled out to all 1,500 primary schools in Moscow, giving 100,000 first-grade students access to a Russian-language version of the Tutor. A teacher training programme for 4,000 teachers was delivered, equipping them to integrate technology into maths instruction.
